What to wear to a job interview

Dress one step smarter than the people you’d work with, in clothes that fit well and that you’ve worn before. Here’s how to get there from what you already own.

The short answer

A tailored jacket, trousers or a skirt in a dark neutral, a plain top, and polished closed shoes. Adjust one step up or down for the company.

A blue blazer, white shirt, tie and brown shoes laid out

Match the company, then go one step up

Look at the team photos on the company’s site or LinkedIn. If they wear jeans and knitwear, chinos and a smart knit are enough. If they wear suits, wear a suit. One step above everyday is the safe target.

Fit matters more than formality

A well-fitting jacket you’ve worn before beats a new suit that pulls at the shoulders. Check that sleeves end at the wrist bone and trousers sit on the shoe.

Keep colour calm

Navy, charcoal, grey, camel and white let your answers lead. Add one colour, if you want it, in a scarf or a top.

Shoes and bag finish it

Closed shoes, cleaned the night before. A structured bag or a slim folder for your CV. Leave trainers and backpacks for the day after.

The night before

  • Try the whole outfit on, including shoes
  • Check for creases, loose threads and missing buttons
  • Look at the forecast and plan a coat or umbrella
  • Lay everything out, bag packed
  • Have a second top ready in case of a spill
